Six Degrees Could Change the World: Final Deliverable

After watching the National Geographic documentary, Six Degrees Could Change the World, my partner Josh Vaughn and I were really moved by the idea that these issues that we are facing with our environment are a result of our own doing. For our project, we wanted to present the viewer with a choice. We decided to show this duality of natural environment and the negative effects of industrialization by highlighting those moments on the globe for a larger big picture effect. We chose to place the imagery in the sea not only to avoid the possibility of a political statement that was brought up in an earlier critique, but also because the oceans are shared spaces for everyone. In photographing the globe we were also careful to hint at the continents without showing too much of one to further avoid that issue. The usage of the sign was one of our means to quickly communicate the concept of choice and to capture the viewer's attention. When opening the dvd package, the viewer is presented with a quote outside of the contents of the dvd by Albert Camus, which reads, "life is the sum of all your choices." We specifically chose to use this quote because we felt that the contents of the dvd didn't although addressing our concept failed to pose the question more directly. The quote also sets causes the viewer to consider the idea of choice as they flip through the juxtaposed images of natural environment and industrialization reaching the disc.

 

Movie Posters & DVD Covers

Personally, one of the most memorable movie campaigns dealing with environmental issues that are memorable and haunting are the posters for the Day After Tomorrow movie. What makes them so effective is that the imagery alone is enough to communicate the concept on both a domestic and international level. They use small portions of iconic symbols that represent particular areas immersed in the severe weather inclinations of global warming to illustrate the concept. Being able to recognize any of these locations causes a emotional reaction that hits close to home for many people.

One of the most important things I learned through the development and execution of this book process is translation. Understanding how to translate literature and sound into image to represent a concept beyond it's content is a skill that can be applied to other areas such as branding. This book book project was just an opportunity to use this skill in a different context. Through the documenting portion of this project I learned how to polish and represent a product. There were a lot of technical details I had to overcome such as lighting, glares, legibility of the covers in photographing them through an electronic object and how the model is interacting with the object. In many of my context shots of Patrick holding the ipad, the book covers weren't has vibrant so I cut each screen out individually and replaced them with the digital image.

Poe Book Covers: Concept Direction Round I

For this round of the project, we moved forward with one of our concept directions to produce full scaled and colored. I decided to move forwards with the idea of illustrating the single repeated sound throughout each book because I felt it would allow for more differentiation in the abstract shape than the direction of mapping out the mental progression of each character.
