April Greiman Lecture Poster: Final Deliverables

April Greiman is a digital pioneer. She has been instrumental in the acceptance and use of advanced technology in the arts and design. While she embraces digital imperfections of technology in her work, her color pallets are inspired by the physical world. Her fascination with space and the duality of physical, digital and mental landscapes has inspired my process for this poster. I chose the title Parallel Spaces, because I sought out to push dimensionality, and interaction between multiple planes.

April Greiman Lecture Poster: Poster Iterations

In this step I began moving forwards with my concept of parallel spaces of the digital, physical and mental landscapes. One important point Marty wanted us to keep in mind from the previous critique was how can our use of type convey our concept in addition to our image, because essentially the two should reinforce and complement each other. In my posters I tried to use image, type and graphic elements to push a different level of dimensionality that also worked together to create unified duality of space. After critiquing with Tyler, it was agreed that poster no. 001 below was the most successful in unifying each element while maintaining the objective of typographic hierarchy of information. However, he suggested that I push the dimensionality of April Greiman's name to the extent I did in poster no. 004 and maybe also include my own process of photographing 2D objects 3D space to create the dimensionality.

April Greiman Lecture Poster: Poster Concepting

As a refresher, we were each given a designer to research and explore for the production of a hypothetical lecture poster. The poster should be both visually engaging to our audience, informative and raise interest for the event. During this step of the project we began concepting different ideas to move forwards with. For my posters I wanted to focus on this notion of physical, digital and mental time and space that I found repetitive in my research of April Greiman.

In my execution I tried to employ some of Greiman's formal approaches to create a sense of movement and depth through transparency, layering and perspective. However, after critique Marty had mentioned the fine line between being inspired by our designer and allowing their process to inform our formal decisions and mimicking, which I think I understand now. Now that I've taken this step to that point, in my process I need to make sure that I understand all my formal decisions and how those decisions work for my purposes but also allude to some aspect of Greiman in my own interpretation. (Not sure if this made any sense.)

April Greiman Lecture Poster: Vanderslice Photoshoot

April Greiman's work has a strong sense of time, space and motion so during my shoot I attempted to slow down the shutter speed to create a similar effect. It was a challenge getting the right amount of motion so that the images wouldn't become too abstract.

Today during class we created a series of hierarchical compositions for our lecture posters that emphasized important information and de-emphasized secondary information. April Greiman Lecture Poster: Presentation

For project two we were each given a designer to research and explore for the production of a hypothetical lecture poster. The poster should be both visually engaging to our audience, informative and raise interest for the event. The key objectives of the assignment is to create typographic and graphic hierarchy, a means of applying a graphic direction across multiple platforms and most importantly, allow the process and work of a designer to inform and inspire our own work.

During this step of the project we were asked to gather information about our designer and then present our research during class in an organized and informative presentation. For this project I was given April Greiman as my designer to investigate. Greiman is regarded as one of the most influential designers of the digital age. She was one of the first designers to embrace computer technology as a design tool and is also recognized for introducing New Wave to the United States.
